Have questions about glaucoma? Here are quick answers to the most common queries. Visit our FAQ page for a comprehensive list.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which is essential for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in your eye. It is dangerous because it is often asymptomatic in its early stages (the "silent thief of sight"), causing gradual, irreversible peripheral vision loss before you notice any symptoms.
Risk factors include being over the age of 40, having a family history of glaucoma, having high intraocular pressure, being of African, Hispanic, or Asian descent, having conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, and having high myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness).
Glaucoma cannot be cured, and vision loss that has already occurred is irreversible. However, treatments—including eye drops, oral medications, laser treatments, and surgery—can effectively lower eye pressure, slowing down or halting further vision loss. Early diagnosis is key.
